Virtual counseling offers many benefits
Blue Collar Counseling is a virtual practice, with all sessions conducted online. This model has significant benefits and relative challenges, depending on one’s needs, personality and age.
For many, the benefits and ease of online therapy are ideal and make the decision to engage in this model relatively easy. Sometimes, obligations can get in the way of seeking in-person counseling. Work, taking care of children and other duties can make scheduling an office visit with a therapist challenging.
Virtual counseling eliminates those challenges. My clients enjoy the flexibility of scheduling with me during their busy day without having to travel to an office; and they often express feeling comfortable in the sessions because they can meet in the privacy of their personal space.
Notably, the virtual model allows me to meet with clients throughout Colorado, extending my reach and connecting me with people who live far away but for whom I am a great clinical fit! Overall, I have been happy with how connected remote sessions can be and have been delighted with how this model has improved access to therapy for many of the folks in my care.
Here’s how virtual counseling works
Don’t worry about privacy because we work on a HIPPA-compliant site that is secure and safe for online work. It is essential, however, to find a private space where we can work without interruption or eavesdropping by others.
You pick the space (car, home, park, etc.) that accommodates your needs. Then you sign on to the designated site and we can start our session.
All you need is a device that allows for an Internet connection and our ability to see and hear each other during the session.
Virtual counseling has drawbacks for some
Challenges within the virtual model have included difficulty engaging with very young clients. Unfortunately, young children, who rely less on verbal communication than play and other forms of communication don’t seem to benefit from remote work to the same degree.
For others, due to the circumstances of their home, it may be preferential to meet away from their residence in the safety of an office.
And for some there can be struggles to secure a good Internet connection, which can create frustration.
Virtual therapy also may not be ideal, depending on an individual’s or family’s needs.
Let’s see if virtual therapy meets your needs
If you are on the fence regarding teletherapy, I would love to extend a free 30-minute consultation so a prospective client can get a feel for the experience of working online.
This consultation will allow us to identify your needs, answer any process questions and see if we are a good fit.
Don’t let obligations keep you from receiving the therapy you want and need. Virtual therapy allows you flexibility and the ability to identify the right therapist.
